Staff Biologist
(Energy Commission Specialist II)
Salary: $7,367.00 - $9,422.00 per Month per month plus state pension plan
Job Description and Duties:
The California Energy Commission is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Staff Biologist to join the Biological Resources Unit within the Siting and Environmental Protection Division. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the conservation of biological and natural resources while supporting California's energy development goals.
Under the general direction of the Biological Resources Unit Supervisor, the Staff Biologist will play a pivotal role in conducting advanced technical analyses for some of the most complex and environmentally sensitive energy facility projects and planning studies. In this capacity, you will serve as a subject matter expert, providing expert guidance and solutions to intricate and often controversial issues surrounding biological resources.
Key responsibilities include independently leading the evaluation of biological impacts for high-priority energy projects, identifying mitigation strategies, and ensuring compliance with state and federal environmental regulations. The Staff Biologist will also contribute to the development of innovative approaches to resource conservation, working on projects that have significant environmental and policy implications.

Desirable Qualifications:
- Extensive knowledge and experience working with federal and state laws adopted for the protection of natural resources, including CEQA, the U.S. Endangered Species Act, U.S. Clean Water Act, and the California Endangered Species Act.
- Experience collaborating with federal and state agencies (including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the State Water Board and Regional Water Quality Control Boards) in evaluating potential impacts to natural resources and developing mitigation strategies to eliminate or reduce those impacts.
- Experience conducting biological resources surveys and field studies.
- Experience conducting project compliance inspections to confirm adherence to permit conditions and assuring compliance with adopted project Mitigation Monitoring and Reporting requirements pursuant to CEQA.
